OLPC XO LAPTOP USAGE IN CLASS

The OLPC XO laptops are used in various lessons in the school, especially the Sciences.

Below are some pictures of our Chemistry teacher, Walter, working with the students using the computers in measurement of pressure in a chemistry class.

On Tuesday, Walter traveled to Ngare Ndare Secondary School to introduce how the Vernier USB sensor apparatus works with the XO's. Ngare Ndare is a new secondary school in the area and is one of the participants in the Ntugi Groups' OLPC initiative.

Apart from using the XO laptops in the school, we made an agreement with the Computer Club, after consultation with their leaders who include Jackline, that the members of the Club should be allowed to be carrying computers home during week days in order to increase their contact hours with the OLPC laptop.

The club has been very busy working out a simple Memorize activity which the Form Ones (who are reporting on Monday 30th, January) will use in order to know the science equipments faster.

School Reopens

Following the long holiday which followed the end year exams, the school re-opened on 5th January with about 95% of the students reporting on the first day and with all teachers present.

The principal (Phineas) welcomed the students back and challenged them to work extra hard in order to achieve their objectives. Alice (deputy Principal) asked the students to be disciplined as usual as discipline goes hand-in-hand with success in academics.

Classes Resume

After the normal opener exams- which are meant to test what the students have been doing over the holiday period- were done the same opening week and currently normal class routine has resumed. Below are some of form three Geography class students doing some research on the types of vegetation found in Kenya.

Science Congress

This term we are going to have science congress competitions, and with that in mind, Simon (our intern working with pilot program at Leparua, Ngarendare, Lewa and Subuiga schools) has come up with a science club in which is Motto, Vision and Mission are:

HOLIDAY TUITION

Following the closure of the school on Wednesday last week, Upper classes (form four and three) students reported back for the tuition on Monday 1st August. Most of the students are seen so busyt in search of a better future. Form four Agriculture students are seen mostly looking at their project crops as they target to reep good marks from the project. Other classes are also running well.

Richard Walker(Jim Walker's son) bought the school a basketball which will be used in with the new basket court(Funded by Jim Walker). the school games captain vowed to lead the school qualify for the Provincial competition come next competition. Mid-Term break

The School has been running well. Yesterday the form four students had a chemistry practical in preparation of the main exam which is due on Oct. They conducted a full practical session, below are some photos of the same.

The basketball field which was kindly sponsored by Jim from Canada is almost ready for use with the remaining bait being the drying up of the board supporters. The students are so much willing and ready to start using the field and they promised good results come next competitions.

A group of dentists students from Norway paid our school a visit today in which they educated the students on the best ways of keeping our teeth healthy. they also donated toothbrushes and toothpaste to our students who were so much glad of the same.

Finally the school broke for midterm today in which the students are expected back in school on Tuesday 28th June. We have three students who will be participating in Safaricom Lewa marathon, hence we shall have majority of our students at the occassion to cheer their collegue.

The month is running on well so is all the other school activities. Yesterday (19th May)the form four Agriculture and Business students had an academic to one of the big farm in our area.

in the field the construction of the basketball field is still under with expectation that by the end of the month it will be fully under use. This is expected to boost the morale of the students and we are looking forward to better results in games and class come next year.

The construction of the basketball court which is kindly funded by Jim Walker and his family has started, currently the constructors are laying the floor and late finishing will be done on the board and the marking. All that work is expected to take approximately four weeks.

Students are so happy and eager to play on the field and are promising to post better results than the previous years.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL/LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION

On my own behalf and on the behalf of Ntugi mixed day secondary school, let me thank every body for supporting the school in the construction of the school library and in particular the county council for donation of the materials for the construction of the library. the parents and the community are proud of this kind gesture.

However, although we did our best the libarry is incomplete although we exhausted the materials and the funds available. This has been very challenging year especially after two consecutive seasons without rainfall.

I kindly appeal to any development partners to come to our aid and assist us see the completetion of the construction of the library and the beggining of its functioning. I am sure the library will boost out performance and it will also be useful to the community in their personal studies and researches.

i am sure this will boost our perfomance and keep our current upward trend( in terms of mean score) intact.

2010 KCSE RESULTS

The Kenya National Examination results were released yesterday by the Minister of Education. Everybody had waited for results in anxiety and after the Principal released the news to the school, everybody was filled with excitement and this saw the students take to the roads in celebrations.

The picture below shows a portion of the students celebrating.

Generally the school registered an improvement of +0.26 from the 2009's results.
According to interview with some of the students, they attributed the increment to the usage of computer in research, the dedication of the teachers and general motivation of the candidates.
After the reception of these results, the current form fours have vowed to work hard and make a positive improvement after their exams come November.

FORM ONE 2011 ARRIVAL

Form one the year 2011 reported on Monday the 31st Feb 2011. Unlike in the past when we had mostly one or two students in the forst day, this year round we had around six of them in the first day.
Due to the fact that these students don't have a lot of work to do, they decided to keep themselves busy with the laptops.
They were so busy with the machines and at the ned of the period, some of them were so happy that they joined Ntugi Sec school and promised to encourage their other friend to join them. Below are some of the photos of these "newborn" with the machines in the computer lab.

Apart from the form ones, we are expected to get the results of the previous form form exams by the end of theis month, we are hoping thatl give us good results.
On games, this term being a very busy term with differnt co-curricular activities, the cross-country people and the other athletes are busy preparing for the same. We wish them success in their preparation.

LEWA GAME DRIVE

Lewa wildrive usually offers a free game drive to the best performing students from our school. Normally that game drive is usually rotated among the four classes. This has been so helpful in the motivation of the students and is has created steep competition maong the students as all compete for the top spots. this time round it was form 3's turn and they wqere alkso preveraged to be accampanied by the Principal for the drive.
The students learnt alot biology and more about rocks in geography.

FIRST TERM 2011

The year is new and everything seems to have started in the best way ever. All the students are back in school and everybody is anxiously waiting for the releasing of the last year's form four exams.
Over the December holiday, the computer lab was furnished and now its completely in use(with all the furniture and the solar power working pretty well.
Below are some of our students doing their private studies in the computer lab.

Other than the completion of furnishing of the computer lab, construction of the School library is underway. This library is partially funded by the county council. When fully constructed, the library shall not only be used by the Ntugi school students but also the neighbouring schools plus the community.

Science forum

Every Thursday we usually have science forum. This is where students present their science or mathematical problem in front of other students and stand the questions from the rest of the school. Since yesterday we had preparation for physics practicals on, The science forum was rescheduled to today Friday.
The subject which was under discussion is Biology.

The two volunteers from California and London departed on Friday and today respectively. Their departure was taken with great sorrow by the students, teachers and the entire Ntugi school fraternity. This happens as the Division organised for common form four prayers for all the schools in Kibirichia division which are held at Kibirichia Boys'. Our students were accompanied by the Principal Phineas, their class teacher Francis and one staff representative Moses.

BOARD MEETING

The school board today held a meeting in which they were supposed to discuse the wy forward for the school.
Earlier in the morning the best students in form three and form four class were awarded as per the school tradition. Also the winning family was awarded.
Families are groups of students who are given a Teacher father or mother and then latter be competing in school activities of which today the awarding was based on academic performance.

Chemistry Discussion

Yesterday Sunday the 26th September our school hosted a number of neighbouring schools for a chemistry discussion in preparation for the end year final exams for form four students.
On his opening speech(Walter) The chem teacher urged the students to avoid panicking during the exam time, they should prepare in advance.
The event was organised to run as from 10 am to 4pm.

Following the school tradition we held the prefect elections last week of which the results were announced early this week. Below is the photo of the elected leaders who are replacing the outgoing form four prefects accompanied by some of the teaching staff.

The same day we received a volunteer teacher from California U.S.A who will be assisting in teaching of English and Humanities. Her name is Beckie.

yesterday the form had a meeting with their subject teachers in which they were advicd on the best preparation for the exam. The principal Phineas told them that they had all that was required for them to pass the exam. They are due to sit for exams on 21st October.

REOPENING OF THE SCHOOL

The school reopened on 8th September with a good number of students (about 98%) present. The whole day was occupied by cleaning and then on Thursday the opener exams started which were concluded yesterday. Still yesterday(Monday 13th) we conducted election of the year 2010/2011 prefects in which the students are allowed to pick their leaders. Results will be released tomorrow.
The normal school routine resumed and classes are running on well.
These students were doing private studies at lunch break in the Science lab.

UCC VISIT

Mark, Kevin, The Walker Family and Gordons family arrived yesterday in our school. These are the people who initiated the construction of the New computer lab and specifically the presence of internet in our school.
When Mark arrived here on March, he came with 8(eight) laptops and no student ahd earlier laid her/his hands onthe computer. Now we have close to 30 computers and more than 60% of the students can comfortably work with computers and Internet.
So they came to ensure that we have more space for the machines and do some technology teaching to some students and the teachers. we are going to be with them for close to 10 days.

Kingsfields school visit.

Kingsfields school from Bristol England payed our school a visit on Wednesday and Thursday in which the ran some workshops concerning sports and other discplines. Their Deputy Principal who accompanied them said that he was so grateful of the hospitallity which was shown by our school. On his comments, our school headboy (Simon) said that he wished and would encourage that the relationship which had sprung up through penpals would continue.
As they left, they had some apparatus which they gave oiur school(they included games equipments and some class stuff like pens and books.

EDUCATION DAY

On Saturday we are going to have the normal annual Education day which will be accompanied by awarding the students who did well in the last years National exam.

The day is meant to motivate the students. Other than the students we are going to have their parents who are also to be educated on good parenting.

The chief guest of will be Mrs. Gichoga a Teacher's Service Commissioner, she will be accompanied by our former Principal(Jacob).

End term exam. Form four District common assessment exams is due to start on Monday 12th July whereby three days later the rest of the students will start their end term exams.

Lewa marathon sponsorship. The class which was sponsored by 2009 Lewa marathon is about to be completed as the diagram below indicates.

MID TERM BREAK

The mid term break is approaching, and as usual students have to sit for a paper before they break. The photo below shows students preparing for the exam-yesterday, The exam stareted today.

Kingsfield school visit and e-pals

Kingsfield school from Bristols England, through their teacher Mike, is going to pay our school a visit over the month of July.

This has encouraged our student to get e-pals (electronic pen pals) from Kingfield school.

These kids are using OLPC laptops which were implemented by Upper Canada College. These laptops have made the exchange possible since its through the OLPC's that we have been able to connect with Kingsfield school.

LEWA MARATHON FUNDING

Lewa marathon is an event which takes place annually.

So Lewa marathon has funded the construction of one classroom in our school which is currently under construction. This means that we shall have reduction in the congestion in our class rooms.

DONATION

Ayeshika and Christina came to our school in the beginning of this term as volunteer teachers. They have been assisting in teaching Geography and History.

Not only were they teaching but also they donated some stuff to different groups in the school.
With aim of assisting in painting in some areas in the school, they donated some painting equipments to the painting club as shown in the oicture below.

Not only did they remember the students but they also remembered the teachers as they gave them some office equipments which were recieved by the curriculum teachers(Moses-far left and Francis with Principal witnessing)

Last week as we had a Board Of Governors(B.O.G) meeting, Ayeshika and Christina joined the group in the B.O.G photo below.

And finally being sports people they also remembered the games department and donated somes games attires to them. Below on far left is Godfrey(games master) and the games captain-Joseph and his assistant-Doreen recieving the items.

SECOND WEEK AFTER OPENING

After Matthew introduced recorder usage in our school, most of the students had a hope that one day they will be using them to conduct assembly during the flag rising days. Below is photo of session of the occasion with some students leading the rest in singing National Anthem using recorder.

Kevin(from UCC) organised some red cabbage seed for Walter(one of our teachers) for their science congress project. They are being taken good care of by the students and currently they have reached the transplanting stage as shown in the photo below.

Re-opening of the school.

The schools reopened today and as usual a good number of students were presents. Cleaning was done by the students simultaneously with staff meeting which was chaired by the Principal.

Among the things discussed by the staff were the way forward and means in which discipline can be improved in the school. It was also noted that the Horizon program which was initiated by Mark and the group from UCC should start but to begin with from home(our school). The meeting was concluded at 1:30 pm.

Tomorrow we shall be starting the opener exams which are meant to test what the students have been doing at home, and to encourage them to be working at home.

AGRICULTURE PROJECTS

Every year in our Kenya National Examinations, Agriculture students usually have to do a practical in which they plant a certain crop-this year they are planting and later take proper care of it. The marks gathered from the project also counts in the final exam. Madam Florence Kaburu the Agriculture teacher assisted the students in the fragmentation and allocation of the plots to the students as shown below.

The Agriculture students will be planting tomatoes while some of the organisation in the school like Y.C.S (Young Catholic Students) and the CU(Christian Union) usually have their own project in the school, the photo below shows a farm owned by the Y.C.S in which they have planted onions.

COMPUTER LAB

The computer lab is still under construction. Mostly we have been using the computers in the scie4nce lab and sometimes in the class room or the compound. Below are some of our students doing some private work on their own after the tuition classes were over.

Over the tuition holiday we have registered a number of new students who have joined us, here is one of them being assisted to create an email account by our students.

Holiday

Tuition is going on well with new students from neighbouring schools joining us. A good number of the are with intention of using the laptops and the internet connection.
We will be breaking for the weekend as from today up Monday when we shall resume for the last week of tuition.

COMPUTER lab construction is going on, and students are so anxious to seeing its completion and functioning.

Its the Easter Monday, and people are just from the Easter holiday, we have resumed to our normal holiday tuition which is based at trying to cover the syllabus with the form three and form four. About 95% of the students resumed with a common aim of succeeding in class work together.

The principal and the deputy principal are in school to see that the tuition has kicked on well.

Science congress and Closing of the school

On Friday the 25th March we had a number of students going out for the District Science congress competition where our students due to hard work raised our flag high. TODAY the 31st March we officially closed the school as per the Government directives. we are rescheduled to open on 5th May but as Ntugi school we are re-opening on Monday 5th April for the form 3 and form four tution.
Today we had the closing assembly in which the best performing students were awarded and we had speeches from all the heads of departments. Today there was an executive board meeting which started at 10 am. The meeting had five members in who included the principal and his deputy. Below is the photo of the members present.

We have an increasing enrolment of students in our school.
This has brought up the need of completion of the constructing a new classroom in order to cater for the population.

The end term exams are still going on well. We are to end the term on Friday next week. So teachers are busy marking and preparing the results for the students.

Exams

The term is coming to an end. As usual we are supposed to evaluate what the students have been doing for the previous 11 weeks.
On Saturday our handball boys team represented the school at the district competition where they emerged number three.

The 2009 results have been analysed ans we have made a positive improvementfrom a mean score of 3.3246 to 4.4672. This improvement has been partially facillitated bythe presence of laptops and internet supply in the school whereby students andteachers have been doing some more research from the web.

Some of the students are also preparing for the science congress competition which will be held the coming Friday. Last year we had four students with two projects at the Provincial competition where they attained position 9 and 10 out of the probable 60 projects in each.

Having done all that, the students have started their end term exam today. Here is a photo of one class with the exam going on.

Exam setting and games.

This is the term packed with a lot of activities. We are from mid-term break and currently we are preparing for the Zonal competition in Basketball, cross country and Decathlon which will be held on the coming Friday (26th and 27th Feb).

Some teachers would't be in school tomorrow (25th) as they shall attend the Zonal exam setting which will be hosted by our neighboring school.

The form four results are also expected in the near future, probably in two or three day's time.

Today was the orientation day for the form ones. With the prefect body having done their part and assisted the form one to elect their class prefect, it was duty of the teachers to introduce them to secondary school.

Among those who talked to the students is:

Godfrey (Games master and computer supervisor) He encouraged them to be active both in class and the field. He also told them to be free to be visiting the computer lab when they are free and get some computer knowledge.
Francis (H.O.D Mathematics) He did some introduction to mathematics and told the kids that they have to have positive attitude in oder to pursue in mathematics
Rosemary(H.O.D languages) She encouraged the students to be speaking english through out for the best results in their exams.
Walter(H.O.D sciences) He told the students that science is part of life.
Moses(H.O.D curriculum) Moses told the students the need for seriousness in the class work if they want their future to be okay.

This is the month of February and this is the month which kids join form one after completing their primary schools. So this is the time we are welcoming the newborns in the school. We are hoping that they shall enjoy the facilities we have here.
Since the whole class as per the admissions has not yet reported, the ones present are spending their days in the computer lab waiting for their collegue to arrive.

Teaching are on well in the rest of the classes and the terms activities have started which include science congress, games(basketball and running) and science forum-where school compete in interclass competition, and the winning class is given a certain token.
A new classroom is under construction in order to handle the form one students who are reporting.

Christmas

Its some days to christmas-the most celebrated occassion in Ntugi community and generaly the whole of Kenya.
People around this area are gearing up with th preparition of the same, remember for the previous three years we have not harvested enough yields(Farming is our backborne), so this year being the best in three years, everybody is so happy and there is no reason not to celebrate and celebrate joyfully.
Before the occassion day we usually do some prior preparations which includes:

Inviting you family members
Purchasing either a goat or some chicken
Buying of new clothes(without these most people can't believe its christmas they are celebrating)

After this we wait for Christmas Eve evening when we go to the church inorder to ensure that 00000Hrs (when Christ is born) comes when you are awake and you are in group.
25th December no working just parting.

OLPC Laptops, Portability and Holiday

My name is Godfrey and I am the computer superviser at Ntugi Secondary school. I am a former student from Kibirichia Boy's Secondary school. The community being a computer illiterate area, I had to try and help our students get some more knowledge of the computer and internet. I use the OLPCs and cradlepoint, but the only challenge comes to energy especially a time like now when the sunshine duration is short because we use solar.

Being over the holiday it can't be possible to blog at school, so one has to carry an OLPC laptop and a cradlepoint home to ease the internet access. Its good to have these computers since they are portable and can stay with charge for some times. Its also good since with the presence of cradlepoint one can access internet.

Right now since the school are closed I took one computer, one cradlepoint, a stick and our data SIM card home so that I would still be accessing internet. As the photo below indicates.

Back at school it has been good since more and more students are getting used to computer usage. Actually a good number of form three students are currently up on facebook and are exploring internet more and more.

The only challenge is the number of students per one computer is so big (one laptop per sevens students).

December holiday

Its December holiday and all the students are and teachers have broken for the festive holiday. This is the holiday which has has the festival (christmas) which is greatly celebrated in our community since everybody around the area is christian.

Currently the students are assisting their parents and guardian with their routine chores especially weeding. Since farming is our backbourne of our survival everybody now is so happy due to the adquate rainfall which means that the food shortage period is over.

After helping their parents,some of the students work on wages basis inorder to solve some of their monor problems which they don't have to involve their parents in.

Thisis the same period of time when the national marking of form four exam is going on and the school is anxiously waiting for the results of the school's second form four class.

End year exams

The end year exams for form one to form three are around the corner.
With form three starting their District Mocks on monday it means that they should also know that they are almost to the final papers. This exam is meant to throw a challenge to them in preparation of KCSE.
Form two and form one will start off on 12th November. This will be a zonal exam.

The school is on with arrangement of the farewell party of our former Principal Jacob which will run simultaneously with form four farewell party. The chief guest will be Jacob.

Construction of a new classroom block is still underway.

We have a population of 203 students.
These students have different background. Thats why you find that students here really strive to get good grades in order to change their background at least to change the way of leaving.
Now being the rain season and having some students who walk in the morning and evening -since the school does not have a bus-for about 7KM to come to school its really a big challenge to them but still they are not giving-up. They usually arrive in school before 7:00am and leave as late as 5:00pm. But all the students reaches their homes before sunset.

Form four exam

The form four final exam starts tomorrow.
Our students are busy doing the final touches bearing in mind that the last minute can save a person.
They(form four) came earlier than the rest of the school in order to do their personal revision.

Our midterm break ends tomorrow. Students are expected in the school by 7:00am in the morning and later the normal school routine will continue.

Mid-term holiday

We are breaking today for mid-term holiday which will last for five days.
This break usully comes after we are through with mid-term exams.
Today we are also having form four prayers days which commences as from 2pm.

Safaricom wap is providing revision question to form four students.
Our school students are using the question in their revision.
Its essential for the students to get used to the different forms in which they can expect the questions.

General meeting

Following the departure of our former principal, the new principal Phineas found it neccessary to call urgent parents general meeting in order to have his fast meeting with them and chating a way forward.
The agendas of the day include
-New principal meeting the parents
-erecting a new classroom block
-How should parents be involved in order to ensure that the students pass well

Also present is the Board chairman, Board secretary, PTA(Parents Teachers Association) chairman, Area Chief and four teachers.

Laptops in the class

It is simple and better to use computer in class.

The presence of laptops in our school has made the students more literate and now they are using them in class work.

The setting of mid term and end of term exams started yesterday.

The curriculum Francis said that all the papers should be submitted to the secretary for typing by Friday 2nd.

Zonal end of term exams will be set as from today up to Friday.

Last term we did a joint zone "end term exams"
Those results were analysed. The Methodist Church awards the best students in the basing the awards on the end of term exams.
The awards will be given to the best students in each form and the best student per subject.
Then the overall winner(school) will also be awarded.

Board meeting

Today there was a Board meeting.
The meeting was aimed at welcoming the new principal in the school.
The Board later met the students where the all the speakers encouraged the form fours who are about to sit for the National Exam by October 21st.
The students promised to have higher number of candidates joining national universities by September next year.
The Principal also introduced the new teachers who were employed to replace the teachers who left for further studies.
Form four Physics students today had a practical in preparation for their final exam.

School Opening

The school officially opened for third term on 9th September 2009.

During that day the major event that occupied the day was cleaning.

After cleaning, the students had a chance of meeting the new Principal who replaced Jacob.

Later on Thursday morning the students started the "Third term opener exams" which were concluded on Monday.

Apart from the former principal leaving, we have got other three staff members who joined different colleges for more education. These are English teacher Doreen, Kiswahili teacher, Tabitha and History teacher, James.

Agriculture project
Form four were carrying out a certain project where they had planted Sukuma wiki.
They were supposed to submit the reports to their teacher(Mrs kaburu) who submitted the same to the District Education Officer later on Tuesday 15th September.

Last term form four exams results were also submitted to the same office today.

Internet Connection

Our school has got internet connection courtesy of CradlePoint company and the Safaricom company in Kenya.
CradlePoint donated a very powerful machine whose coverage is about 1KM on a flat land.

Above is the CradlePoint category MBR1000.

Cradle point has also provided us with other machines which include the 8 routers (both PHSs CTRs and MBRs) CradlePoints which we use to connect 18 OLPCs.

These machines are of great importance. They are used by students in their studies, as well as connecting to the rest of the world. Teachers also have found them of great use as most prefer to do their lesson plan at home, some other teachers are using these machine in their studies( like Kimathi who is taking a masters degree)

We use Safaricom modems and sim card.

Safaricom is our data provider. Erick from Safaricom helped with the interface between Safaricom and CradlePoint.

CradlePoint has kindly supported the purchase of our safaricom data for a whole year.

The school year start during the first week of January

The first term begins on the first week of January and runs up to Late March. This is the term when we have science congress competition and drama activities going on
The second term starts early May and runs up to early August. This term we have the science congress provincial competition and the Annual Mathematics context in mid June
The third term begins early September and runs up to late November.This term we have very little activities going on with much of the time spent on revision as the end year exams are done at the end of this term.These are the exams which enables one to graduate to the next class.
